Why salt lamps sweat, and what to tell customers

A salt lamp that beads moisture, drips onto furniture or leaves a damp ring on a windowsill is not faulty. It is behaving exactly as sodium chloride does in humid air, and understanding that will save you a meaningful number of retail returns.
The mechanism
Salt is hygroscopic: it attracts water vapour from the surrounding air. Above roughly 75 percent relative humidity, salt crosses its deliquescence point and will actively pull enough moisture to dissolve its own surface. In a humid room with the lamp switched off, that surface water accumulates and runs.
Why the bulb matters
A traditional incandescent bulb warms the crystal a few degrees above ambient, which is enough to keep the surface evaporating faster than it absorbs. Leaving the lamp on is genuinely the fix. This is also why USB and LED lamps sweat more readily — a cool LED provides none of that drying warmth, which is worth knowing before you position an LED range in a tropical market.
Print this on the insert: leave the lamp switched on, keep it off unsealed wood, and wipe with a dry cloth — never wash it. Retailers who include this consistently report far fewer returns.
Care guidance that works
- Leave the lamp lit as much as practical — this is the single most effective measure
- Do not place it in a bathroom, conservatory or beside an open window
- Stand it on a coaster or sealed surface, never bare untreated wood
- Wipe with a dry or barely damp cloth; never rinse or wash
- If it goes unused for weeks, bag it with a silica sachet
What this means for your market
In dry climates the issue barely appears. In coastal and tropical markets it is the number one customer complaint in the category. If you are selling into Southeast Asia, the Gulf coast or the Caribbean, weight your range toward bulb lamps rather than LED, and make the care card prominent rather than buried in the box.
